The Reactions of Cerianthus to Light

نویسنده

  • Mary Mitchell Moore
چکیده

1. When Cerianthus membranaceus is illuminated upon one side, the animal turns its anterior portion toward the source of light. The number of degrees through which the animal turns is proportional to the logarithm of the intensity of the light. 2. A light intensity of between 250 m.c. and 15,000 m.c. is necessary to cause retraction of the animal. 3. The part of the spectrum which is most effective in causing heliotropic bending of Cerianthus lies between micromicro 510 and micromicro 570.

The Reactions of Cerianthus to Light by Mary

I t has long been known that direct sunlight (1) will cause Cerianthus membranaceus to withdraw its tentacles and body within the sheath which in nature lies beneath the sandy bottom of the sea. On the other hand, a relatively weak light causes prompt heliotropic turning toward the source of light. Since light increases the muscle tone of these animals it is apparent that light as strong as sun...

Tropistic Reactions of Cerianthus Membranaceus

1. Cerianthus shows stereotropism and if fed regularly will remain indefinitely in glass tubes. The animal retains turgor only so long as the entire surface of the body is in contact with the glass. 2. Cerianthus is positively geotropic as regards the foot and body. It will work upward into a glass tube suspended at an angle of 35 degrees as a result of stereotropism, but if the tube is raised ...

The Reaction of Cerianthus to Two Sources of Light

1. In case Cerianthus is acted upon by two lights of unequal intensities the relation between the angle turned and the ratio between the intensities of the two lights is mathematically expressed by the equation log(10) See PDF for Equation tan a, in which See PDF for Equation is the ratio of the two lights, a is the angle turned from the neutral position, and K = 0.615. 2. According to publishe...

Thermodynamic Analysis of Light Olefins Production via Cracking of n-Hexane Using Gibbs Energy Minimization Approach and Analysis of Overall Reactions

Thermodynamic analysis of the cracking of hexane has been conducted by the Gibbs free energy minimization method and second law analysis of overall reactions. By-products have been divided into three groups of methane, alkynes and aromatics and their possible production paths have been discussed. Effect of operating conditions such as temperature and steam-to-hexane ratio on the cracking perfor...

Ab initio Study of Simple Mg-Ene Reactions of Propenyl Magnesium Halides and Ethylene (Type-I Intermolecular Reaction)

The insertion of an olefinic C=C bond into a metal-carbon bond is of potential interest as a preparativeroute to new products and as results of C-C coupling reactions to organic compounds. The allyl compoundsof Mg, react with an olefin by inversion of the allyl group via a six center transition state. These precyclicreactions may be one of the most important classes of organic reactions. The re...
